Long-Duration Inflation ETFs Rise Over 6%; Falling Rates Boost Yield-Sensitive Bonds

The drop in Brazilian interest rates on October 5 triggered a sharp rally in inflation-linked treasury bond ETFs. XB6011 advanced 6.08% and TD6011 gained 6.02%, outpacing portfolios that distribute exposure across varying maturities or concentrate in shorter-dated bonds.

The movement occurred during a session marked by compression in risk premiums following the first round of elections. Across the nominal yield curve, the January 2029 DI interest rate futures contract fell 1.04 percentage points to 12.65%, while the January 2031 maturity dropped 1.22 percentage points to 12.70%. The sharp yield curve flattening across intermediate and long tenors highlights the magnitude of the shift in Brazilian asset pricing.

For IPCA-indexed bonds, price appreciation reflects the decline in market-required real yields. The higher a portfolio’s duration, the greater its price sensitivity to such rate shifts. This difference in sensitivity was the key factor driving performance variation across ETFs.

XB6011 (XP Asset): +6.08%

XB6011 concentrates its exposure in NTN-B inflation-linked treasury bonds maturing in 2060. This characteristic places the fund among the most sensitive strategies to shifts in real yields, as the bond distributes interest and principal payments over a very long horizon.

When market-demanded yields decline, these future cash flows increase in present value. The 6.08% rise highlights the magnitude of this mark-to-market adjustment. Over a trailing one-month window, the ETF gained 11.16%, showing that Monday’s advance extended an existing upward trend for the portfolio.

TD6011 (Itaú Asset): +6.02%

TD6011 also tracks a strategy centered on 2060 NTN-B bonds. Consequently, its primary driver matched that of XB6011: the combination of an ultra-long maturity with falling real discount rates.

The 6.02% gain brought its one-month return to 10.66%. The tight alignment between both ETFs underscores the dominant role of the underlying benchmark in driving performance.

10BK11 (Galapagos): +4.89%

10BK11 offers a different exposure profile: its strategy seeks to maintain a target duration near ten years by spreading portfolio holdings across NTN-Bs of varying maturities. In the September 1 index weighting, 2037 bonds represented 25%; 2040 bonds, 21.76%; 2045 and 2050 bonds, 20% each; and 2055 bonds, 13.24%.

This distribution captures long-dated bonds without concentrating total risk in a single maturity. Index duration stood at approximately 10.4 years as of the baseline date. The fund gained 4.89% on the day and 8.04% over one month, benefiting from real rate compression with lower duration sensitivity than strategies concentrated in 2060 bonds.

B5MB11 (Bradesco Asset): +4.35%

B5MB11 tracks the IMA-B 5+ index, composed of inflation-linked treasury bonds with maturities exceeding five years. Its portfolio gathers multiple tenors along the long end of the curve rather than relying exclusively on an ultra-long NTN-B bond.

The 4.35% advance demonstrates that price appreciation reached a broad spectrum of bonds. Accumulated returns reached 7.44% over one month and 13.68% year-to-date. The fund captured mark-to-market gains from falling real yields, with intensity dictated by portfolio cash flows and maturity distribution.

IB5M11 (Itaú Asset): +4.30%

IB5M11 also tracks the IMA-B 5+ index. Its exposure to identical maturities explains its close alignment with B5MB11: both benefit from declining real rates across the long-dated treasury segment.

The 4.30% gain brought performance to 7.21% over one month and 13.53% year-to-date. The key takeaway lies in index composition: longer-dated bonds carry higher interest rate sensitivity and therefore reacted more sharply than short-duration inflation portfolios.

IMAB11 (Itaú Asset): +3.15%

IMAB11 tracks a broader basket of NTN-Bs, combining short- and long-dated bonds. The inclusion of maturities with lower rate sensitivity moderates the portfolio’s response compared to ETFs focused purely on long tenors.

The 3.15% gain brought one-month returns to 5.55%, with year-to-date performance reaching 13.67%. The result shows how a diversified inflation-linked allocation participates in long-bond rallies while preserving a portion of capital in assets with lower yield sensitivity.

03BK11 (Galapagos): +1.41%

03BK11 targets a duration near three years. Its strategy carries lower real-rate sensitivity than 10BK11’s portfolio, despite both investing in IPCA-linked treasury bonds.

The 1.41% rise, alongside a 3.20% gain over one month, illustrates this difference. The performance spread compared to 10BK11’s 4.89% gain reflects the impact of duration: two portfolios in the same asset class can respond quite differently to identical yield curve shifts.

B5P211 (Itaú Asset): +0.95%

B5P211 tracks the IMA-B 5 P2 index, a strategy holding NTN-Bs maturing within five years with average maturity controls. This structure concentrates exposure in bonds that are less sensitive to real rate swings.

The fund advanced 0.95% on the day, accumulating 2.62% over one month and 12.32% year-to-date. The daily gain was smaller due to the portfolio’s muted response to rate cuts. Its return combines inflation accrual, coupon yield, and mark-to-market price variations resulting from market rates.
